Photographed yesterday, the 1st of February, while there is snow on the fells, this is the first of the season, 4 full weeks earlier than last year!

A friend of ours has been honing her videographic skills by making a short movie of Jenkin Hill Cottage, shot over a period of an hour, and starring our regular guests, Peter and Tricia, the video can be seen here.

Improved bus timetable for Summer

We are pleased to have extra buses through the village on the X5 Keswick/Workington route, which provides a roughly hourly service through the day. These extra buses run until 3rd September. Download the timetable.

Ospreys move house!

The Basenthwaite Ospreys have returned to the area, but instead of using their previous nest on Dodd they have decamped and set up a new nest on the West side of the Lake, not far from us here. This does mean that, for the moment at least, there is no nestcam in place – it was set up above the old nest. A good view of the nest can be seen through the telescopes at the Dodd viewpoint.

First daffoldils of the season

The first daffodils of 2011 are blooming in the hedgerows already. These are just 20 yards up the road from us, and soon the lane to the village church will be lined by hundreds of yellow blooms. The daffs in our garden are well in bud so we have those to look forward to.

Great show of snowdrops

There are hundreds of snowdrops in our garden at the moment, and you will also find them in the hedgerows out and about in the North Lakes.

This week the trees opposite us have really started changing into their autumn hues, and have been almost glowing in the brilliant sunshine we have been having. The holly trees are full of ripe berries – just ready to be attacked by the birds!
